Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I installed the software and the `Bayes' tab shows up, but when I click on that tab nothing happens, what's going on?

Installing the software is not enough, you must also configure VNMR to find the software. In this case click on `Main Menu', next `Setup', followed by `App Mode' and finally click on `Bayes'. This should set the necessary paths for VNMR to find the macros and menus.

  2. I set the Bayes application mode and VNMR now runs the macros, but the Bayesian Analysis programs are not being found, what's going on?

You must configure your path and library search path variables to run the Bayesian Analysis package, configuring these variables is described here.

  3. I set the Bayes application mode and VNMR now finds the programs but the programs are crashing, what's going on?

You must configure the library search path to run the Bayesian Analysis programs, configuring these parameters is described here.

If you have configured the library search path, and the programs are still crashing then it is possible these program will not run on your system. They were compiled for generic Sun and SGI systems, but your machine may be one that does not fit this category.

  4. I installed remote processing and set up the Bayes.Remote.Queue.File, but when I click the "Foreground/Background/Remote" button I never get the remote machines, it just cycles Foreground-->Background-->Foreground, etc. What's going on?

There are several possibilities, but try the following:

    • On the VNMR command line issue "bayes_general_vars('reset')" to reset the definitions of all of the Bayesian Analysis parameters.
    • Next check to see if the remote queue file was found, type "bayes_remote_queue_file?" in the VNMR command line. If this parameter is set to "None" then the file Bayes.Remote.Queue.File was not found in either /vnmr/bayes/help or vnmrsys/help; otherwise this parameter will be set to the fully qualified queue file name. If this file was not found, follow these instructions to create this file.
    • If the "bayes_remote_queue_file" parameter is set, check the status of allow remote parameter, issue "bayes_allow_remote?". If parameter says "No" then either curl, tar or gzip were not in your path.

  5. I installed remote processing and set up the Bayes.Remote.Queue.File, and when I click the "Foreground/Background/Remote" button it cycles correctly, but when I send off a job the system just sits there. Nothing seems to happen. What is going on?

This sounds like a problem we encountered when we were first trying to run jobs cross country. The people down at South West Medical Center were using a proxy and we had to tell "curl" about the proxy. Otherwise curl sends out the request but the firewall filters everything out except request through the proxy so curl just waits and waits, nothing ever happens. To configure curl to use a proxy follow these instructions.

  6. I installed remote processing and set up the Bayes.Remote.Queue.File, and when I click the "Foreground/Background/Remote" button it cycles correctly, but when I send off a job I get an error message that says the submit failed and the queue information is displayed in the text window. What is going on?

When this happens "curl" sent the message to remote host, but the remote host either did not know what to do with the request, or the server is down. You can test to see if the server is down by issuing "curl your.server.ip_address:port" if the server is up you should receive the default page. If the server is not up, start it.

If the server is up and you still get this message then the "cgi-bin" being used by the server is probably not configured correctly. The "cgi-bin" directory should contain the following scripts: Bayes_cancel, Bayes_get_status, Bayes_get_results, Bayes_remove_completed_job and Bayes_submit_job. If they are not present, then move them from the "cgi-bin" directory located in the "bayes" account. If they are present then check to make sure they are executable and that the server is configuration to use that cgi-bin directory.
